Non-fiction Writing Course

The Non-fiction Writing Course is offered online. It consists of seven lessons, and each lesson consists of between 4 and 13 topics (altogether there are 49 topics). The course content complements readings from the prescribed book, The Natural Creative Process in Writing: a Core Writing and Editing Handbook for Everyone, the PDF version of which is available for purchase from the WriteArt Shop web page.

You have 10 months in which to complete this course. If for valid reasons, you cannot finish it within this period, this period will be extended.

At the end of each topic, there is a self-assessment quiz that you will need to complete. These do not count towards attaining your certificate, but they do enable you and your course instructor to identify any areas in which you may need assistance. Your course instructor is available throughout the course to assist where necessary, and this is done on an online (VOIP) call.

After satisfactorily completing all of the lessons, topics and quizzes, and  based on your performance in a practical and a final, summative assessment, your certificate will be issued.

The course is aimed at equipping participants with the skills necessary to start working as a professional non-fiction writer. It does this by providing an understanding of the professional approach and practices that will enable course participants to sustain a career in this field. It also provides the methodology and framework for ongoing professional self-development.

The Natural Creative Process in Writing: a Core Writing and Editing Handbook for Everyone, by Russell de la Porte (ISBN: 978-0-620-71074-9)

Electronic Copy-editing & Proofreading course

I have just completed the WriteArt copy-editing and proofreading online course. I found setting up the course and access to the necessary information easy and the instructions clear. The content of the course was comprehensive, helpful and informative. The prescribed text book 'The Natural Creative Process in Writing' was not only useful for the course but also for my own writing. Russell was friendly, helpful and instructive in the feedback sessions. I would definitely recommend this course for someone interested in going into copy-editing.

Electronic Copy-editing & Proofreading Course

I found this course very helpful, particular in terms of thinking about the process of writing and copy-editing. It’s made me more aware of how I proofread texts and what kind of steps I take to ensure my job is done properly. It’s also prompted me to think about the writing process differently, something that has made writing feel more approachable for me. Russell was incredibly helpful and understanding which made the process easier and far less stressful than it could have been.

Electronic Copy-editing course & Proofreading course

This is a very serious course that made me realize the importance of having to develop a good command of grammar. The course is very comprehensive, and it requires grit, perseverance and commitment of time and resources on the part of the student. What I also liked about taking this course was the fact that the tutor was always available to offer assistance and encouragement, and he responded to queries promptly.
