Earnings possibilities available to copyeditors

In an evolving economic environment worldwide, with outsourcing playing an increasing role, many are seeking additional or alternative income streams. They may wish to supplement an existing income or to replace it altogether. Or they may be considering switching from onsite to remote or virtual work. These considerations may form part of a lifestyle change: for example, a move from the city to the countryside. Another lifestyle change might involve becoming a digital nomad, in so doing, combining work and travel.

Training to become a professional copyeditor and proofreader is one way for those interested in communication and language to adapt to this changing economic environment or to make the lifestyle changes they desire. It may also present an opportunity for those in a reduced-work life phase, for example, those in retirement who may wish to work part-time.

Often people interested in becoming freelance copyeditors and proofreaders choose a reputable course to launch their careers. Good courses mainly cover three areas in-depth: professional approach, language and style. They equip course participants to launch a career, but beyond this, they provide a methodology for lifelong professional development.

Freelance and full-time work opportunities open to trained copyeditors and proofreaders are the following, among others – in the list below, the opportunities, freelance and in-house, are offered by publishing houses, companies, other organisations (e.g universities, cooperatives and nonprofits), and individuals:

  • Copy editing and proofreading of, among others, websites, blogs, newsletters, press releases, manuals, brochures, articles, and papers.
  • Revising and rewriting of, among others, corporate blogs, press releases, and course materials.
  • Managing brands' language and style, including font types (e.g. Helvetica, Calibri), font styles (bold. Italic), font sizes, language variety (e.g. British vs American English), and spelling (e.g. the -ise vs -ize word endings).

The above opportunities can be accessed directly or through freelance platforms.

Taking a reputable copyediting course would also enable writers and self-publishers to copy-edit their own texts and publications, enabling them to reduce the scope – and hence cost  – of their outsourced copyediting and proofreading. With their expanded skill sets, they may also be able to supplement their writing and self-publishing income with the additional opportunities available to them.

Similarly, translators could also benefit from taking a professional copyediting course, which would facilitate the switch from sense to detail and aid them in the 'finishing' stage of their work.

So, if you find the world of words appealing and you wish to expand your professional offering or change the way you work, taking a comprehensive copyediting and proofreading course could be the way to bring about the change you want.

All companies (and non-profit organizations) should ensure that the copy-editing function is a part of their structure and processes. This can be achieved by providing one or more people who work for the company with reputable training; alternatively, freelancers can be used on an ad hoc basis. The goal should be that all the company’s documentation and other written communications, including its marketing messages, are edited by an expert in the areas of language and style before they are distributed or published.

We all know that contrary to the idiom that we should not judge a book by its cover, most of us do so. In other words, image counts; first impressions count. The reason for this is that when audiences, or readers, notice errors, they will subconsciously associate these with the person or organization thought to be behind the document or publication (including websites). So, in the reader’s mind, the poor quality of the text signals that the company will deliver low-quality products or services.

To perform the copy-editing function, one needs training in copy-editing, for copy-editing involves more than just ensuring that documents and publications are error-free. Proficiency in grammar and spelling are just two aspects of the copy-editing function. Other aspects involved are style (applicable to both language and design), including using style manuals, style guides and style sheets; work study, or the processes involved in copy-editing; marking up texts; communications, for example with other team members and participants (including graphic designers).

Becoming an effective copyeditor presupposes an understanding of what constitutes good writing. Economy, diction, composition, these are all aspects of good writing. To ensure that the documents and publications produced by a company meet these standards, they must be understood and embraced.

Beyond copy-editing documents and publications, training in copy-editing equips one to become part of, or to oversee a company’s document and publication management function or department. When the copy-editing function is incorporated in a company’s structure and processes, the effects are observable, and the impression given is one of brand consistency, which translates into reliability, and hence, trustworthiness.

If you are a one-person company, doing a copy-editing course may enable you to perform the copy-editing function in your company; alternatively, selecting a suitable employee to train as a copyeditor could be another way of incorporating the copy-editing function. Some larger companies – including publishing houses – employ one or more copyeditors full-time, with additional capacity met through a panel of freelance copyeditors.

The Electronic Copy-editing and Proofreading Course, offered by WriteArt, provides the knowledge and tools, described above, to enable the copy-editing function to become an integral part of your company’s makeup. It also enables freelancers to offer copy-editing, rewriting, document management, and other services to companies who wish to outsource their copy-editing and document management functions.

Training in copy-editing could also enable you to pursue careers in teaching English as a second language and writing. If you are a freelance translator, indexer or designer, training in copy-editing could add to your suite of services offered.
