Freelance and In-house Copyediting and Proofreading Course

If you want to launch your career as an in-house or freelance copyeditor and proofreader, this online, video-based course will equip you with the tools to do so.

This course is aimed at those who want to work as copyeditors and proofreaders, as freelancers or in-house. It is also aimed at those who wish to copyedit their own work, or who want to use it as part of their skill set in the publishing and media industries

If your work already involves editing and proofreading documents and publications, and you want to improve your skills, this is also the course for you.

The course gives the background to professional copyediting and proofreading, familiarizes you with the necessary tools and resources, and shows you how to use word processing software to edit and proofread. It also provides a comprehensive framework of English grammar.

For those who wish to use their newly acquired skills and knowledge in ways other than to pursue a career as a professional copyeditor and proofreader, for example, to ensure textual brand consistency or to assist them in their management of teams of wordsmiths, proficiency in English prior to registering for this course may not be essential. If, on the other hand, you intend to use the knowledge and skills that you will acquired on this course to pursue a career as a professional copyeditor and proofreader, you will need to be proficient in English (CEFR, or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, level C2), which in turn, will be consolidated by having completed this course.

Please note that there are many ways that you may apply the knowledge you will acquire on this course; for example, you may want to apply it to your own work as an author, or you may want to use it to implement and manage textual brand consistency within your organization. However, if you wish to become a full-time professional copyeditor and proofreader, you will need to engage deeply with texts; this requires a keen eye for detail; sometimes, depending on where you will be applying your expertise, it may require long periods of concentrated (sometimes isolated) work. Thus, to sustain a career as a professional copyeditor and proofreader, it is advisable that one possess the necessary work-related disposition, or aptitude.

The prescribed book for this course is The Natural Creative Process in Writing: a Core Writing and Editing Handbook for Everyone, available in Kindle e-book format for under $2 from Amazon.com. By downloading the free Kindle e-book reader from Amazon.com, you will be able to read this e-book on most devices.
